The marvellous valley

You cannot come to Château Cablanc without seeing the surrounding area, the Gamage's river valley. The Gamage, a small brook that flows into the Dordogne river, runs through the vineyard and the wooded valley.

During the Middle-Ages, this area experienced considerable growth due to the presence of the English; churches and castles all around the valley bear witness to those times.

At the time, vines were planted in the valley; attacked by phylloxera, a tiny destructive insect, they disappeared at the end of the 19th century. Thanks to Jean-Lou Debart, vineyards were re-planted at the beginning of the 1960s.

The buildings - wine-making cellar, bottle-storage cellar, wine-tasting room, barrels cellar and office - are located in the middle of the valley. Most were purpose-built; only one old building was renovated and has become the bottle cellar.

When you come to Château Cablanc, you would think the buildings had always been there as they are built in stone in the local style.

A treasure in the hunt

The family estate covers 120 hectares (296 acres), including 60 hectares (148 acres) of vineyard planted on clay-limestone soil. Three red grape varieties are planted: Merlot (60% of the vineyard), Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon (20% each).

There is a lot of work in the vineyard, from november to july : pruning, thining out the leaves,...
